Paravel has just wrapped up an exciting secret project with three of the web’s most talented designers: Jason Santa Maria, Frank Chimero, and Naz Hamid. These designs are epic, like 18,123px epic. Working with these guys was a complete joy. There were a few fun development challenges and – as you might expect from these gentlemen – a lot of fancy typography work in the delivered PSDs.

Curtis CSS Typeface · David DeSandro
CURTIS CSS TYPEFACE
Curtis is the name I’ve given for a family of geometric sans-serif fonts currently in development. Other incarnations exist as Fontstructions: Curtis Heavy and Curtis Pixel 14. This version takes form in CSS. All shapes are rendered by the browser, using a combination of background color, border width, border radius, and a heavily reliance on absolute/relative positioning. You can get a better idea of how the letters were formed with the Inspect display option.

Speech bubble icons have become synonymous with comments. When creating yet another one for a standard comment link, it occurred to me that there might be a way to make the icon without ever opening up an image editor. It could all be done with CSS. After all, a word bubble is only two shapes a rounded rectangle and a triangle. For it to work, I just needed to add a couple tags inside the comment link.

These are just a few examples of what can be done using the CSS Text Wrapper. Note that the wrap shape stays constant regardless of font or content.
The examples on this page use the javascript method to apply them to the site. There are two other ways to create the wrap without using javascript and that are purely CSS/XHTML.

CSS Text Wrapper
The CSS Text Wrapper allows you to easily make HTML text wrap in shapes other than just a rectangle. You can make text wrap around curves, zig-zags, or whatever you want. All you have to do is draw the left and right edges below and then copy the generated code to your website. Get to it!
Tested in Internet Explorer 6 , Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Netscape.
